The First Annual International Short Play Festival

The Intentional Theatre takes joyous pride in pronouncing The First Annual International Short Play Festival a SUCCESS!!!

Nearly 150 plays were received from writers from around the United States, and even as far away as Australia.  Narrowing the selections down to the twelve chosen was a long process involving (as you may suspect) a lot of reading and discussion.  After the first group of "semi-finalists" was chosen, more reading followed with more discussion.  After that, the audition process followed as we tried to best match up the talented group of actors in the area to the diversity of the roles required by the works chosen to be presented.

While all of the plays were receiving their Connecticut debut in the Intentional Theatre Short Play Festival, some had been produced by theaters in other states around the country, while others were enjoying their "world premiere" on our stage.  We were very excited to have had such a remarkable mixture of styles to present to you this year.  We offer our thanks, and congratulations, to the playwrights whose works were chosen for this year's festival .

The plays chosen received a script-in-hand staged reading presented by the Intentional Theatre the third and fourth weekends of September, 2006.  Plays were presented with a minimum of production values.  Set pieces, props, costumes, lighting and sound were all reduced to the barest of essentials, allowing a focus on the story and characterizations.  Script-in-hand means the actors do not necessarily memorize their lines, but are able to refer to their scripts when needed.  But don't be fooled - all the plays were elevated to a very polished performance level for the production.

How can we top this unqualified success?  Well, we have a year to figure that, until our Second Annual Short Play Festival goes up.  And by then, we hope to have found the answer to that question.  If you came out to the shows, we hope you enjoyed yourself.  If you missed it, well... you'll just have to wait until next year.

In the meantime, you can read about it and see some pictures of the show here.
